TO REGISTER TO VOTE YOU MUST:
- be a citizen of the United States.
- be 18 years of age. NOTE: individuals may "pre-register" to vote when they are 16 years of age, but their registration will not be activated until the first election following their 18th birthday
- be a resident of the county for at least 30 days before the election.
- not be in prison for a felony conviction.
- not claim the right to vote elsewhere.
HOW TO REGISTER?
You can request a registration form through the mail by calling (315) 349-8350 or (315) 349-8351. You can also download a form or fill one out online at the links below:
Forms are also available at most government offices including the Town of Volney, post offices and libraries. Complete the form and mail it to your county board of elections.
You may also register online through the New York State Online Voter Registration Portal, through the Department of Motor Vehicles website or in person at your county board of elections. To register in Oswego County, mail the voter registration form to Oswego County Board of Elections, 185 E. Seneca St., Oswego, NY 13126.
You need to re-register to vote if:
- you move out of the county
- change your name
- change your party enrollment
If you move within your county, call your county board of elections for specific instructions.
ENROLL IN A POLITICAL PARTY OR CHANGE PARTY ENROLLMENT
You use the same form as you do for registering to vote, in the party enrollment section, select the box for the party you wish to enroll in.
NOTE: beginning in mid-February, party enrollment changes are not made immediately effective. Requests to change enrollment made after the deadline will go into effect after the primary election. If you have questions regarding change of party enrollment, contact the Board of Elections.
DEADLINE INFORMATION
You can register in person at your county board of elections on any business day, except election day, or electronically on the using either of the links above. If you want to vote in an election, you must mail, deliver in person or electronically submit this form to your county board of elections no later than 10 days before the election in which you want to vote. Your eligibility to vote will be based on the date you file this form, and your county board will notify you of your eligibility.
