The Town of Volney History Center invites the public to a historic presentation on: “Muck Farming in
Oswego County” on Sunday, August 9, 2026 at the Volney Town Hall. Muck Farming was brought to
America primarily by Italian immigrants around the turn of the century. I believe this presentation will be
for you.
Town of Volney historian, Bob Coant will lead you through some in depth history and discussion about
the muck farming industry that fed our citizens at very reasonable prices. The history of muck land and
how it was formed goes back some 11,000 years! We think you will be surprised at the process and
history of this farming method. There will also be plenty of presentation boards to read as well as some of
the tools used on these farms on display. Best of all, you can see some actual muck soil from one of
Volney’s muck farm.
Light refreshments will be available and there is no charge for the event.
